Sound, Translation, and Virginia Woolf
Adele Hu, Research Project with Dr. Xi Xu

Project Introduction
This project explores the role of sound and soundscape in Virginia Woolf’s writing and the problems that emerge when auditory experience moves across languages. Working with Dr. Xi Xu, I examined how literary sound is constructed through rhythm, repetition, voice, spatial perception, and other textual devices, and how these effects may be altered or reconstructed through translation.
The project developed my interest in literary sound as something that is not simply represented by language but produced through the formal and sensory organization of a text. It also led me to think about translation as an interpretive practice that must negotiate experiences, such as sound, atmosphere, and perception, that do not always have straightforward linguistic equivalents.
